POSITION DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

  • Ensures that the technical experience our patrons receive is of a professional quality.
  • Oversees and manages the technical requirements for all PCA programming and rentals.
  • Responsible for the engineering and coordination of set construction for all stage productions and rentals.
  • Responsible for overall coordination of all technical aspects of production including lights, sound, and properties.

AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Operate shop, stage, and house in accordance with all appropriate safety standards and procedures.
  • Operates within a technical production budget including shop and theater equipment.
  • Responsible for use, inventory, and maintenance of all sound, light, and mechanical equipment.
  • Establishes and administers equipment and property rental policies and procedures.
  • Approves all plans and designs for show lights, sound, and sets.
  • Ensures that all equipment is maintained and in safe working order.
  • Oversees all visual and technical support including the setting up and operating of sound, lights, and audio-visual equipment for productions.
  • Operates all backstage areas within assigned budgets.
  • Coordinate with all contract professionals.
  • Operates in a multitasking environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration.
  • Responsible for supervision and training for backstage volunteers.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of stage, sound, lighting, mechanical equipment, and rigging including electricity and electronic systems and hardware.
  • Thorough knowledge of theatrical, musical, and stage show technical techniques and requirements.
  • Skilled in planning, organizing, and supervising all stage build out, set up, load-in, and strike activities.
  • Project management techniques required to operate several theaters simultaneously in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Team player that can lead and be part of a team as an individual contributor.
  • Has ability to respond to unusual and rapidly changing situations with calm flexibility and an attitude of service.
  • Creative problem solver who can deal with complex and ambiguous challenges.
  • Has a working knowledge of technical production software and systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theater, Theater Management, or Technical Theater.
  • Back stage theater experience including lighting, sound, set construction, and stage management.
  • Experience as Technical Director/Manager in the performing arts environment.
  • Must be able to climb tall ladders, change light bulbs, and fix leaking toilets.
