VMware's Open Source Program Office was established in 2016 and is at the heart of the way in which VMware uses open source components and contributes to the broader open source ecosystem. You will lead this team's growth as an integral part of achieving VMware's multi-cloud strategy with products and services that are built on top of innovative enterprise open source software.You will spend time diving into detailed technical and legal discussions so that you can distill the key points of these discussions in ways that help our leadership and product teams understand the strategic implications of our open source work. You will lead a group of program managers working on all aspects of open source license compliance and on strategies around VMware's engagement with open source. You will also lead a group of open source engineers working on some of the most interesting leading edge projects and exemplifying the best practices of engaging in open source, which shaping their path to broader adoption in partnership with your peers on the Research and Innovation leadership team.**What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?**VMware needs to use open source components in ways that comply with the corresponding open source licenses and needs to ensure that contributions to third party open source projects follow those same rules but also protect VMware's IP portfolio. As VMware engages with open source communities, all employees need to be aligned around a shared strategy and be able to coordinate internally coordinate the approach and direction taken in those contributions. All VMware employees need to follow a well-defined set of best practices in how they participate in and contribute to open source projects. If you are passionate about innovation, you will find your leadership role in VMware's Research and Innovation organization in the Office of the CTO to be exceptionally appealing because you will have direct influence on how and where open source shapes VMware's next wave of technology offerings.**Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?****Within your first 6 months, you will:**+ Immerse yourself in the disparate technologies and open source projects that comprise VMware's portfolio, strengthening relationships with your new reports and peers across VMware.+ Define and articulate requirements to accelerate the growth and impact of VMware's OSPO.+ Champion our culture of embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion which has been key to OSPO's rapid growth and success.+ Drive and evolve the existing open source compliance and best practices program, tooling, processes, and automation+ Advise VMware teams who want to release some or all of their products under open source licenses on how to build and sustain vibrant open source projects+ Advise the VMware executive team on open source strategy**After 6+ months, you will:**+ Increase the impact of VMware's contribution to open source projects+ Expand cultural awareness of open source within VMware+ Provide key open source influence both within VMware and across external open source communities+ Act as a key external representative of VMware's in the open source communities, including conference speaking, press interviews, involvement in industry wide initiatives such as the Linux Foundation, as well as a broader blogging/social media presence+ Partner with leadership peers in the R&I organization to shape and define new innovations and project priorities.+ Ensure that open source compliance policy documentation as well as innovation project documentation remain current and are available to VMware employees.**What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?**Your work covers an impressively diverse set of challenges and will often be driven by outside events for which you will be coordinating VMware's position and response. Additionally, you will be involved in the decision flow regarding use of, contribution to, and creation of open source projects across VMware. You will act as an expert influencer around supply chain security, open source business models, open source risk, and many other, related topics. You will use both your technical and business expertise to guide VMware in many questions around the use of open source components in enterprise grade software.**What is leadership like for this role?
