Description of Position
This is a lead position responsible for overseeing and performing all Grounds and Custodial operations at The Pines. The incumbent ensures that the campus grounds, facilities, and common areas are clean, safe, and well-maintained. Duties include grounds and landscaping work, irrigation system maintenance and repair, and the safe application of herbicides and insecticides. This position also performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, modification, and repair tasks, and oversees room setups, unit move-out cleaning, and daily trash and recycling disposal.
Minimum Expectations & Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in landscape and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to perform grounds maintenance and landscaping (Tech I and Tech II Grounds) duties with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of irrigation system operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of water-efficient landscaping practices and responsible water resource management
  • Awareness of fire-adapted landscaping principles and defensible space requirements (Firewise practices)
  • Knowledge of the use and safe handling of insecticides, herbicides, and related chemicals
  • Proficiency in felling trees using a chainsaw
  • Knowledge or willingness to be trained on pool maintenance and daily water chemistry testing
  • Knowledge or willingness to be trained on wastewater treatment systems
  • Knowledge or willingness to be trained on domestic water well monitoring
  • Knowledge of basic trade activities specifically related to grounds work
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools commonly used in grounds maintenance
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds continuously/daily, 50 pounds occasionally, and team lift items over 50 pounds as required
  • Valid Arizona driver's license
  • Perform work or deliver a wide variety of items to different addresses and through different routes via loading, unloading, and operation of a YC vehicle
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function, demonstrating dependability and commitment to daily responsibilities

  • Valid Arizona Driver's License - Required
  • The following certifications must be obtained within six (6) months of hire:
  • OPM Industrial Certification
  • OPM Turf and Ornamental Certification
  • Arizona Weed Control Applicator Certification
  • Pest Control Certification

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially when interacting with campus/site personnel and the public
  • Ability to represent the Grounds department and Facilities team professionally and tactfully
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and follow through on assignments
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment with changing priorities
  • Strong customer service orientation with a proactive approach to resolving site-level concerns
  • Familiarity with Firewise landscaping practices and a proactive approach to maintaining defensible space
  • Commitment to sustainable water use, including conservation-focused irrigation and plant selection
  • Experience working in a community college or higher education environment is a plus
